Five days in Los Angeles is a genuinely satisfying visit, but you will not see Los Angeles. The city is massive, spread across dozens of distinct communities, and understanding that going in is the first step to enjoying it. Five days means choosing your LA rather than trying to cover all of it.
What 5 Days Really Allows
Los Angeles doesn't have a centre in the European sense. It has neighbourhoods, each with a distinct character and a significant driving time between them. Five days gives you the space to actually pick three or four areas and get to know them rather than racing between fifteen.
The logical first division is between the Westside (Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Brentwood, Culver City) and the Eastside (Silver Lake, Echo Park, Los Feliz, Highland Park). These feel like different cities and genuinely are, culturally. Hollywood and the Hills (Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign, the Mulholland Drive viewpoints) are between them geographically. Downtown LA has transformed significantly in the last decade: the Broad museum, Grand Central Market, the Arts District, and Little Tokyo are all worth serious time.
Five days means you can spend a full day on the coast (Venice boardwalk in the morning, Santa Monica Pier in the afternoon, dinner in Brentwood), a full day in Hollywood and Griffith Park, a full day in Downtown and the Arts District, and still have two days for the places that interest you specifically.
When 5 Days Falls Short
If you want to do anything south of the city (Long Beach, Palos Verdes, San Pedro and the Korean Friendship Bell), north of the city (Malibu coast, the Topanga Canyon, Ojai), or east (Pasadena, which has the Huntington Library and Gardens and the Norton Simon Museum), five days is not enough. These are all worth going to. Pick two.
Day Trip Potential
Santa Barbara is 90 minutes north by train and genuinely one of the most pleasant small cities in California: the Mission, the harbor, the wine country. Palm Springs is about two hours east by car and completely different: mid-century modern architecture, desert landscape, celebrity connection, the Tramway up to the San Jacinto Mountains.
San Diego is about two hours south by train or car: the Balboa Park museums, the Old Town, and the Zoo are all worth a day.
The Bottom Line
Five days in Los Angeles is enough for a real first visit if you're strategic about geography and don't try to see everything. Pick your neighbourhoods, rent a car or get comfortable with Uber, and accept that you'll be back. Our Los Angeles guide on Etsy helps you structure the choices.
