Los Angeles is safe in its tourist areas and this caveat matters. Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Griffith Park, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame area are broadly manageable for visitors. But LA is a vast, complex city with enormous inequality, and parts of it have serious crime problems. The honest answer requires knowing which part of the city you're talking about.
The Real Risks
Theft from cars is rampant across Los Angeles and is the single most consistent risk for visitors. Never leave anything visible in a parked car, anywhere. Camera bags, laptops, sunglasses, shopping bags: all have been stolen from parked cars in tourist areas including Santa Monica, Griffith Park, and near the Hollywood sign trailheads. The windows get smashed in seconds.
Skid Row and parts of Downtown LA have some of the most concentrated homelessness and drug use in the US. This isn't particularly dangerous if you're aware of where you are, but it can be a confronting and disorienting environment for unprepared visitors.
Petty theft on the Venice Beach boardwalk and the Hollywood Walk of Fame area is common. Keep bags close in crowds.
Catalytic converter theft from rental cars is a known issue. Nothing you can personally prevent, but be aware.
Solo Travel and Specific Groups
Solo female travelers should be aware that LA's car culture means walking is unusual in many areas. If you're walking in a neighbourhood that's clearly designed for cars, be more alert. West Hollywood is one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly areas in the US and is specifically recommended as a welcoming base.
LA is LGBTQ+-friendly, particularly West Hollywood (WeHo), which has a globally famous scene and a strongly supportive local culture.
Practical Safety Tips
- Never leave anything visible in a parked car; remove everything including items from door pockets.
- Use ride apps rather than walking between areas that aren't pedestrian-friendly.
- Keep bags close on Venice Beach and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
- Carry small amounts of cash; card skimming at some gas stations has been reported.
- Know which neighbourhood you're in; the difference between safe and unsafe blocks in LA can be a single street.
