Is 7 Days in Krakow Enough?

Seven days in Krakow is comfortable. You will cover the city well, have time for the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial site, and still have room for a day in the Tatra Mountains or the Wieliczka Salt Mine. Krakow is compact enough that you never waste much time getting around, which means more of the week goes on the actual things you came to see.

What a Week Actually Gets You

Krakow's Old Town is one of the best preserved in Central Europe and deserves proper attention. Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral on Wawel Hill are the most significant sites in Poland and worth a full morning. The Main Market Square (Rynek Glowny) is large, beautiful, and easy to return to throughout the day. St. Mary's Basilica, the Cloth Hall, and the Town Hall Tower all sit on or near the square.

Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, is entirely worth a full half day. The synagogues, the Galicia Jewish Museum, the street food scene, and the cafe culture make it one of the most interesting parts of the city. Oskar Schindler's Factory Museum is large and well done and should be booked in advance.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine about 15 kilometres from the city is genuinely extraordinary: 300 metres of underground corridors, chambers, and chapels all carved from salt. An easy half day by minibus.

What Still Gets Left Out

Even with seven days, some things slip through. The Nowa Huta district, the communist-era model town to the east of Krakow, is fascinating for the right kind of visitor but requires a specific journey. The Historical Museum of Krakow has multiple branches and you will probably only visit one or two. Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains is worth a full day and some visitors prefer to base there for a night.

How to Structure the Week

Days 1 and 2 go to Krakow's core. Wawel Hill on day one (book Wawel Castle entry in advance). Main Market Square, St. Mary's Basilica, and a first exploration of the Old Town on day two.

Day 3 is Kazimierz. Take the morning slowly through the quarter, visit the Galicia Jewish Museum, and spend the afternoon at Schindler's Factory (book ahead).

Day 4 is Auschwitz-Birkenau. This is a significant and emotionally heavy day that deserves its own space. Go with a guided tour from Krakow, arrive early, and allow the full day. Book well in advance.

Day 5 is Wieliczka Salt Mine. Half-day trip, easy to do in the morning, afternoon back in Krakow.

Day 6 is the Tatra Mountains at Zakopane. Cable car up Kasprowy Wierch for mountain views, the wooden architecture of the town below.

Day 7 is for anything left undone in Krakow, the food market, and whatever neighbourhood you want to revisit.
