Five days in Las Vegas is probably one too many if you're spending all of them on the Strip. Three to four days is the sweet spot for the casino world. Five days makes sense if you're planning excursions into the surrounding desert and national parks.

What 5 Days Really Allows

Las Vegas is unique in that it's genuinely absorbing for the first two or three days and then starts repeating itself. The Strip hotels are all different but structurally similar. The shows, the dining, the casino floors, the pools: three days is enough to sample all of these properly without overdoing it.

That said, five days gives you time to do it all without rushing anything. You can see one or two big shows without feeling like you're choosing between them. You can eat at multiple different levels of the Vegas dining scene: a proper high-end tasting menu one night, a good value buffet another, a steak at a mid-range casino steakhouse, a meal off the Strip in a local neighbourhood. You can spend a full day at the pool not worrying about what you're missing.

The old Fremont Street Experience downtown is genuinely different from the Strip and worth a separate evening. The Neon Museum is excellent if you have any interest in American sign culture and mid-century design. The Smith Center for the Performing Arts puts on genuinely good productions that often have Vegas runs before Broadway.

When 5 Days Is Too Many for the Strip Alone

Las Vegas has a repetition problem for visitors who aren't gamblers. If you don't play, the casinos quickly feel like interchangeable spaces designed to disorient you. Four days can be long even for enthusiastic visitors. Five days purely on or around the Strip requires genuine love of the atmosphere or a significant gambling budget.

Day Trip Potential

This is where five days around Las Vegas earns its place.

The Grand Canyon South Rim is about four to five hours each way by car or bus tour. It's a long day but one of the most spectacular sights in North America. Most visitors go by organised tour, which handles the logistics. Zion National Park is about 2.5 hours from Las Vegas and one of the finest national parks in the American Southwest: the Narrows, Angels Landing, and the Emerald Pools are all accessible with some planning. Red Rock Canyon is only 30 minutes from the Strip and a half-day of hiking, rock formations, and complete silence.

Hoover Dam is 45 minutes and a genuine engineering marvel worth a few hours.

The Bottom Line

Five days in Las Vegas is too many if you're just doing the Strip. It's well spent if you mix two or three Strip days with desert excursions. Our Las Vegas guide on Etsy helps you plan the mix.
