Is 4 Days in Salzburg Enough? Honest Answer

Four days in Salzburg is generous for the city itself and excellent for the surrounding region. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is compact and can be covered thoroughly in two days. Four days means two more spent in the Austrian and Bavarian landscape that makes Salzburg one of the best-positioned cities in Central Europe.

What 4 Days Unlocks

Salzburg's old city is extraordinarily beautiful and entirely walkable. The Getreidegasse shopping street with Mozart's birthplace, the Cathedral and the Residenz, Mirabell Gardens, and Hohensalzburg Fortress above the city: these are a very good two days.

The fortress deserves a proper morning. It's the largest fully preserved castle in Central Europe and the views over the rooftops and down the Salzach river to the Alps are one of the finest panoramas in Austria.

The Sound of Music tour is optional, obviously, but Salzburg was the filming location for a globally beloved film and many visitors genuinely want to see the abbey at Nonnberg or the Mirabell Gardens gazebo. Four days means you can include this without it eating up your entire cultural programme.

The day trips from Salzburg are excellent. Hallstatt, the impossibly pretty lakeside village about 90 minutes southeast, is one of the most photographed places in Austria. The Salzkammergut lake district extends from Hallstatt into a region of clear mountain lakes and traditional Alpine villages. The Bavarian town of Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest are about an hour away across the German border.

Innsbruck, the Tyrolean capital, is 90 minutes by train and has a remarkable old city and immediate access to the mountains.

What You'll Still Miss

Vienna is three hours by fast train and a separate destination entirely. Four days in Salzburg won't reach it.

The High Tauern National Park, with the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and some of Austria's finest mountain scenery, is a driving excursion that needs its own planning and the right season.

How to Structure 4 Days Well

Day 1: Salzburg old city. Getreidegasse, the Cathedral, Residenz, and Mirabell Gardens. Evening in the Altstadt.

Day 2: Hohensalzburg Fortress in the morning. Afternoon for the Mozart museums or the Sound of Music experience if that's on your list.

Day 3: Hallstatt. Full day. Take the train to Attnang-Puchheim and connect to Bad Ischl and Hallstatt, or join a day tour.

Day 4: Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest, or Innsbruck. Both are excellent.
