Three days in Salzburg is more than enough for the city itself. Salzburg is a beautiful, compact city that can be covered thoroughly in a day and a half. The case for a three-day stay is to use the extra time for the surrounding region: the Salzkammergut lakes, the Sound of Music locations in the countryside, or a day trip into the Alps. Salzburg alone for 72 hours requires deliberate pacing.

What You Can Cover in 3 Days

Three days based in Salzburg works well as a regional base:

  • The Old Town and the Getreidegasse. Mozart's birthplace, the covered shopping street, the Kollegienkirche, and the Residenzplatz. A focused morning covers the historic centre completely. The Old Town is compact and UNESCO-listed; it's everything the photographs suggest.
  • Hohensalzburg Fortress. The hilltop castle above the city is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Europe. The funicular runs from the Old Town. Allow a couple of hours and stay for the view over the city.
  • Schloss Mirabell and the gardens. The Baroque palace and its formal gardens were used in the filming of The Sound of Music. The gardens are free to enter and genuinely beautiful.
  • The Salzkammergut lakes. Wolfgangsee, Hallstatt, and the surrounding mountain lakes are about an hour from Salzburg. Hallstatt in particular is one of the most photographed villages in Europe. A full day for the lakes and the Alpine scenery.
  • Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest. Just across the German border, about an hour from Salzburg. The historic site above Berchtesgaden is extraordinary for its history and its Alpine setting. Summer only; the road closes in winter.

What You'll Miss

  • Vienna by day trip. About two and a half hours by train. Feasible as a full-day excursion but a long one. Better saved for a dedicated Vienna trip.
  • The full Sound of Music tour. The organised coach tours cover filming locations across the region. If this is your primary reason for visiting, it requires a full day and advance booking.

How to Make the Most of It

  • Do the city on day one, the lakes on day two, and leave day three flexible. This sequencing gives you the Old Town while everything is fresh and the lakes on your most energetic day.
  • Walk the Old Town rather than taking any form of vehicle. The entire historic centre is pedestrianised and small enough that a map is almost unnecessary after an hour.
  • Book Hallstatt accommodation or arrive very early in the morning. The village is small and extremely popular. Day trippers arrive by mid-morning; getting there before 9am is a completely different experience.
  • Check the Eagle's Nest opening dates before building your itinerary around it. It opens mid-May and closes in October. Shoulder season visits need to verify access.

The Honest Verdict

Three days in Salzburg is generous for the city but sensible as a base for the surrounding region. Two days covers the city and its fortress, and one day points outward into the Alps and the lakes. That's the right structure for a Salzburg long weekend.
