Copenhagen has beautiful summers but they are not warm by Mediterranean standards. June through August brings long days, sometimes very long, with temperatures typically sitting between 17 and 23 degrees Celsius. Warm sunny days do happen and they are glorious. But so do cool grey ones, and rain is a genuine presence across all three summer months. Pack for a northern European summer: brighter and longer than winter, but not warm enough to pack only T-shirts.
The Heat/Weather Strategy
The real payoff of Copenhagen in summer is the daylight. June and July see the sun setting past 10pm, which stretches evenings significantly and makes the city feel alive well into the night. The trade-off is that even the warmest days rarely push above 25 degrees, and evenings cool down regardless of the daytime temperature.
Wind is a factor. Copenhagen is coastal and the sea breeze can make a 20-degree day feel considerably cooler, particularly along the harbour and in Nyhavn.
City-Specific Must-Haves
A light waterproof jacket or rain layer is the item you cannot leave behind. Copenhagen rain is not dramatic but it is frequent. A packable waterproof that fits in your bag is the right call for every day out.
Layers are essential. A T-shirt base, a mid-layer (light jumper or thin fleece), and a waterproof shell covers every weather scenario Copenhagen summer throws at you. You will wear all three layers at some point and only one of them at others.
Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are necessary for the city's mix of paving, cobblestone in Christianshavn and the old city, and the canal paths. Copenhagen is very walkable and very cyclable. If you rent a bike, padded shorts or just comfortable leggings handle the Danes' preferred transport well.
Sunscreen for bright days. Copenhagen at peak summer has a UV index that surprises visitors who associate the north with weak sun.
A slightly smarter outfit is worth packing. Copenhagen's restaurant scene is exceptional and some of the city's better dining rooms appreciate an effort. Smart casual covers it without needing anything formal.
What to Leave Behind
Leave behind Mediterranean-level heat expectations and the clothing that goes with them. You do not need multiple sets of shorts only: temperatures are as likely to call for a layer as not. A beach bag and swimwear are nice-to-haves rather than essentials unless you are planning a harbour bath visit, which is genuinely worth doing.
Heavy winter gear is unnecessary. A light waterproof and a mid-layer is all the cold management you need in June through August.
