May is one of the best months to visit Copenhagen. The city shakes off winter properly, daylight stretches past 9pm, and the crowds that define July and August haven't arrived yet. Prices are still reasonable. If you're deciding between spring and summer, May wins most arguments.

Weather

Temperatures sit between 10°C and 17°C through the month. It's genuinely pleasant rather than warm, and rain is possible at any point. Pack a light waterproof layer and comfortable walking shoes. Evenings cool down noticeably, so a mid-weight jacket earns its place in your bag.

Crowds and Prices

Copenhagen is never cheap, but May is noticeably calmer than the summer peak. Hotels and flights are meaningfully less expensive than in June and July, and the main attractions like Tivoli Gardens and Nyhavn are busy without being overwhelming. Tivoli reopens for its summer season in mid-April, so it's fully running by May. Book Tivoli admission in advance but don't stress about sold-out timeslots the way you would in August.

What's On

1 May is Labour Day, a public holiday in Denmark. Expect some shops and smaller businesses to be closed, particularly early in the day. There are often outdoor gatherings and events in parks, which adds to the atmosphere rather than disrupting plans.

Copenhagen Marathon takes place in mid-May, drawing around 15,000 runners through the city's streets. If you're visiting that weekend, expect road closures in central areas and a lively, festival-like buzz around the route.

The city's outdoor dining culture comes alive in May. Harbour-side spots and canal cafes set out their terraces, and locals make full use of every sunny hour. It's a good time to experience Copenhagen at its most relaxed.

One Thing to Watch

The marathon weekend will close several central streets on a Sunday morning. If you're planning to cross the city by taxi or on foot during the race, check the route and build extra time into your plans. It's manageable if you know about it in advance.
