September is one of the better months to visit Copenhagen. It's not the cheapest city at any time of year, but September brings noticeably thinner crowds, pleasant weather, and a cultural season that's fully reopened after summer. If you've been putting it off because of August prices, September is the answer.

Weather

Copenhagen in September runs between 12 and 18°C. It's cooler than central and southern Europe, but not cold. Layers work well: a t-shirt and light jacket combination gets you through most days. Rain is possible but usually light. The cycling culture continues year-round in Copenhagen regardless of temperature, so don't let the numbers put you off. The light in September, particularly in the mornings, is excellent.

Crowds and Prices

Nyhavn and Tivoli are still popular into early September, but the tourist peak has clearly passed. Tivoli itself closes for the season around mid-September before reopening for its Halloween event, so check dates if that's a priority. The food scene across Vesterbro and Norrebro is easier to get into from mid-September, with restaurant reservations at the kind of places that are impossible in summer suddenly becoming manageable. Hotel prices edge down from August's peak.

What's On

Copenhagen is consistently strong on cultural programming. September sees new autumn exhibitions opening across the National Museum, SMK (National Gallery), and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art up the coast at Humlebaek. The Copenhagen Jazz Festival runs in July, but the city's live music scene is active year-round. Check what's on at DR Koncerthuset, Copenhagen's main concert hall, for September dates.

One Thing to Watch

Noma's influence on Copenhagen dining means the city's restaurant scene has stratospheric top-end pricing. A tasting menu dinner at one of the serious restaurants will cost more than your flights. This is not September-specific, but September is a good time to get into mid-range restaurants that were fully booked through summer. Set a realistic food budget before you go and include at least one proper sit-down meal.
