Copenhagen in October trades summer warmth for something arguably more interesting: the city's authentic self. The Danes reclaim their restaurants, the design scene operates at full intensity, and prices drop to levels that make Copenhagen feel less punishing on the wallet. It's genuinely cold by late October, but if you dress for it, the city delivers.
Weather
Expect 10-13°C in early October, dropping to 7-9°C by late October. Rain is frequent and the wind off the water adds a chill. This is proper Scandinavian autumn, not a mild continental one. Pack a warm coat, waterproof layers, and good walking shoes that can handle wet streets. Copenhagen has excellent indoor culture, great cafes, and a museum scene worth exploring, all of which make the weather irrelevant for significant portions of the day.
Crowds and Prices
Much quieter than the summer peak. Copenhagen is one of Scandinavia's most visited cities and summer prices reflect that. October brings hotel rates down noticeably and timed entry to popular attractions becomes straightforward. Nyhavn is still photogenic and still worth visiting, but without the summer queue for a canalside seat. The restaurant scene, including some of the world's most talked-about places, is easier to book.
What's On
Copenhagen's cultural season is in full swing. The Danish cultural calendar runs strong in autumn with music, theatre, and art. CPH:DOX, the documentary film festival, typically falls in March, but the city's independent cinemas run interesting October programming. The Danish Design Museum and SMK (National Gallery) both have active exhibition schedules. Halloween is gaining traction in Denmark but remains low-key compared to Dublin or the US.
One Thing to Watch
Copenhagen's food scene is extraordinary but expensive by most European standards. October doesn't fully close that gap, but the lunch culture (smørrebrød, open-faced sandwiches) gives you access to high-quality Danish food at prices that are much more manageable. Lunch at a proper smørrebrød restaurant is one of the best things you can do in Copenhagen and it costs a fraction of dinner at the same calibre of kitchen.
