Brussels in summer is an underrated city break. Temperatures reach the low-to-mid 20s Celsius through June, July, and August, the Grand Place terrace culture is in full swing, and the city is navigable in a long weekend without rushing. The catch is that Brussels weather is Belgian weather, meaning rain is a credible threat at any point in the day, and light grey skies are as common as blue ones.

The Heat/Weather Strategy

Belgium's summer climate sits in the warm-but-variable category. On good days, Brussels is genuinely pleasant: outdoor dining, walks through the Sablon district, and evenings on terrace bars. On less good days, it is overcast and damp. The useful packing approach is to not resist this reality and instead pack for both versions of the day simultaneously.

Do not count on clear skies for any particular activity. Plan outdoor visits with a backup that works regardless.

City-Specific Must-Haves

A compact, packable waterproof jacket is the most important item in your day bag. Not in your hotel room, in your bag. Brussels's showers arrive without ceremony, usually mid-afternoon, and the city's arcades and covered galleries can only shelter so many tourists at once.

Comfortable walking shoes handle the combination of cobblestones in the historic centre and the more regular pavements of the Ixelles and Schaerbeek districts. Good grip matters on wet stone.

A light layer for evenings is practical. Even on warm days, the temperature drops noticeably after dark, particularly if you are sitting outside.

Smart casual covers Brussels well. The city has a slightly more formal atmosphere than Amsterdam or Berlin, particularly around the EU quarter and nicer restaurants in the Sablon. One slightly more polished outfit in the bag is worth it.

Sunscreen for clear days. The UV index in Brussels in July is genuinely worth attending to, even on partly cloudy days.

What to Leave Behind

Full rain gear and heavy waterproof trousers are overkill. A light waterproof jacket handles everything Brussels's summer can throw at you. Heavy winter layers and thick coats are completely unnecessary in June through August.

Overly formal clothes add weight without payoff. Brussels is not Paris: restaurants here are smart-casual at their dressiest.

Plan the Full Trip

Packing sorted. The guide answers the rest: which museums are worth the queue, how to read a Belgian beer menu, and how to spend a day trip to Bruges or Ghent from Brussels without losing half of it to train logistics.
