May is one of Brussels' most pleasant months. The city is warm, the outdoor terraces on the Grand-Place and in the Ixelles ponds area are full of life, and the Belgian capital has an interesting combination of EU politics, chocolate culture, and a genuinely good restaurant scene. It is still underrated as a city break and May rewards the visit.
Weather
May in Brussels sees daytime temperatures of 16C to 19C, with mild evenings around 10C. Sunshine is more reliable than April. Rain is possible but the city is very walkable between the major sites and the covered Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert shopping arcade provides excellent wet-weather cover. A light jacket for evenings is the main packing consideration.
Crowds and Prices
Brussels does not attract tourist volumes comparable to Amsterdam or Paris, and May remains a manageable month. The Grand-Place, the Atomium, and Mini-Europe are accessible without significant queues. Labour Day (1 May) is a public holiday with demonstrations and some closures. Pentecost weekend (late May or early June) is a busy domestic travel period in Belgium.
What's On
Labour Day (1 May) in Brussels involves trade union marches through the city and is a genuine public holiday with some businesses closed. The Brussels Jazz Weekend typically takes place in late May with free outdoor concerts in the Sablon area. The Iris Festival celebrates the Brussels-Capital Region in late April and early May with events across the city's 19 communes. The Belgian Comic Strip Centre is an excellent option year-round and uncrowded in May.
One Thing to Watch
The EU institutions (European Parliament, European Commission) have a busy May calendar, with plenary sessions and summit preparation affecting central Brussels. This brings significant numbers of business travellers into the city and can drive up central hotel prices on specific dates. Check whether any EU summits or plenary sessions overlap with your visit if accommodation price is a consideration.
