Brussels in October: What to Expect

Brussels doesn't always get the credit it deserves, and October is a good example of why it should. The Grand Place in autumn light is genuinely one of Europe's great city-centre views, crowds or not, and in October the crowds drop enough that you can actually stand in front of it without being jostled. Add to that some of the best beer and food in Europe at very reasonable prices, and Brussels in October is a quietly excellent city break.

Weather

Expect 11-14°C in early October, cooling to 8-10°C by late October with regular rain. Brussels has a reputation for grey skies that is largely earned, but the city functions perfectly well in drizzle. The main attractions are a mix of indoor and outdoor, and the indoor ones, the Magritte Museum, the Comic Strip Museum, the Autoworld, are all worth time regardless of weather.

Crowds and Prices

Significantly quieter than summer. Brussels doesn't have the extreme tourist peaks of Amsterdam or Paris, which means October just makes a manageable city even more manageable. Hotels are competitively priced, and restaurant bookings at the better places are easier to secure. It's a good time for the city.

What's On

Brussels often hosts major EU events and summits in autumn, which can affect hotel availability if you're there the same week. The Brussels Jazz Weekend has passed by October, but the autumn arts calendar is active. Belgian comic book culture has its own events calendar, and the BIFF (Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival) typically runs in April but autumn sees strong film programming across the city's independent cinemas.

One Thing to Watch

Brussels is a genuinely bilingual (French and Dutch) city with a significant expat population. The political quarter around the EU institutions has a different feel from the tourist centre. October is when residents reclaim their city, which means restaurant culture shifts slightly towards regulars. A bit of French or Flemish goes a long way in neighbourhood spots away from the Grand Place, and October is a good time to explore those rather than staying close to the tourist core.
