Brussels in December punches above its weight. The city is already underrated as a year-round destination, and in winter it leans into its strengths: great beer, serious food, some of the best chocolate in Europe, and a Christmas market that spreads across the Grand Place and down to the Boulevard Anspach in a way that genuinely earns its reputation. Early December is the sweet spot. Christmas week and the run-up to New Year are busy and expensive.

Weather

Cold and typically Belgian: overcast, with a reasonable chance of drizzle on any given day. Temperatures stay around 3°C to 7°C through December. Not as brutal as Berlin or Warsaw, but not mild either. Wrap up and you'll be fine. The Grand Place looks extraordinary in winter light, especially in the evenings when the floodlighting hits the guild houses. Dress for walking.

Crowds and Prices

Brussels is big enough to absorb its December crowds better than somewhere like Bruges. The Christmas market area around the Grand Place and the Winter Wonders festival gets packed on weekends, but the Sablon neighbourhood, Saint-Gilles, and Ixelles remain very local and very calm. Flights and accommodation are competitive through most of December, though Christmas week sees the usual spike. The advantage Brussels has over Bruges or Amsterdam is that you can escape the tourist orbit without going very far.

What's On

Winter Wonders runs from late November through the first days of January. The Grand Place is the heart of it: a giant tree, a light show projected onto the guild houses each evening (free, runs every 30 minutes or so), stalls selling Belgian food and crafts, and an ice rink in Place de Brouckère. The market stretches along the Rue du Marché aux Herbes and down towards the main shopping boulevards. The Sablon Christmas market is smaller, more artisan, and significantly less crowded. For a Brussels December, pair the market with a proper Belgian beer cafe session, a box of chocolates from Pierre Marcolini or Neuhaus, and at least one bowl of mussels. That's the formula.

One Thing to Watch

The Atomium, one of Brussels' signature sights, is worth visiting in December when it's lit at night and there are no summer queues. Book timed entry online rather than turning up and hoping. The Mini-Europe adjacent attraction closes for winter maintenance, so check dates if that's on your list.
