Brussels is one of August's underrated picks. While most of Europe is bracing for peak crowds, Brussels sees a partial local exodus as Belgian residents head to the coast or abroad, which actually makes the city pleasantly manageable. The Grand Place is still busy, but "busy for Brussels" is not in the same league as Rome or Barcelona in August.
It's warm, the beer gardens are open, and the waffle stalls are always there.
Weather
August in Brussels averages 21 to 24 degrees, occasionally warmer. The city doesn't get Mediterranean heat, but the past few summers have produced some genuine heat waves. Evening temperatures are mild, making outdoor eating and walking the city at dusk genuinely enjoyable.
Rain is always possible in Belgium. A light layer and a compact umbrella are sensible travel companions regardless of the forecast.
Crowds and Prices
Brussels is a year-round business destination, so tourist season pricing is less dramatic than in purely tourism-driven cities. August is busy for leisure visitors, particularly around the Grand Place and the Manneken Pis, but the overall city remains navigable.
The Belgian National Day falls on 21 July, just before August, and brings the city alive with events. If your visit starts in late July, you may catch the tail end of the celebrations.
Hotel prices are elevated in August but Brussels remains competitive with other Northern European capitals.
What's On
The Flower Carpet, one of Brussels' signature events, takes place in the Grand Place every two years in mid-August, with the square covered in a geometric pattern made from two million begonias. Check whether it falls in your year, as it's one of the most visually striking public events in Europe.
Ommegang, the historic procession celebrating the Habsburg era, typically runs in June or July, but check dates as they shift.
One Thing to Watch
Many Brusseleirs leave in August, which means some smaller neighbourhood restaurants and local cafes close for two to three weeks. The tourist centre around the Grand Place stays open, but if you're hoping to eat at a specific well-reviewed neighbourhood spot, check they're open before making it the anchor of an evening.
