Brussels in February is a city that quietly rewards those who bother. It is not glamorous winter travel, but the Grand-Place is more impressive with fewer people in it, the Belgian beer bars are exactly what cold weather is for, and prices are some of the year's lowest. Brussels is often treated as a gateway city rather than a destination, which means February visitors get a capital that genuinely has not run out of things to offer.

Weather

February in Brussels averages 1C to 7C. Rain and grey skies are the default. Snow is possible. The wind off the surrounding flatlands makes it feel colder. Pack a serious coat, waterproof shoes, and layers. The good news is that Brussels has excellent indoor culture: a dense network of museums, chocolate shops, and grand cafes designed for exactly this weather.

Crowds and Prices

Low season. The Grand-Place is walkable at your own pace. Museums including the Magritte Museum and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts are accessible without planning around crowds. Flights from the UK and northern Europe are cheap. Valentine's weekend sees a modest price increase in central hotels, but Brussels is not primarily a Valentine's destination in the way that Paris or Bruges are.

What's On

Pre-Lent Carnival runs across Belgium in February, and while Brussels itself does not host the most famous events (Binche Carnival, about an hour from the city, is one of the world's most spectacular), the broader Carnival season brings energy to the city. The Brussels Film Festival also typically runs in February. The city's comedy and theatre scene is strong in winter.

One Thing to Watch

Brussels is a city of distinct neighbourhoods, and the distances between them are larger than first-time visitors expect. The Grand-Place, EU Quarter, and Ixelles all require transport between them. The metro is good but factor in journey time when planning days, particularly in cold weather when walking long distances is less appealing.
