Brussels in April: What to Expect

Brussels in April is underrated. It does not attract the attention of Amsterdam or Paris in spring, which means it is quieter, easier to move around, and still genuinely good. The Grand-Place looks excellent in soft spring light, the beer bars are welcoming, and the city runs at a pace you can actually enjoy.

Weather

April in Brussels brings temperatures between 7C at night and 14C during the day. Rain is frequent but rarely heavy or prolonged. A light waterproof layer is worth having. The weather is similar to London in spring: changeable, occasionally brilliant, occasionally annoying. Dress in layers and do not plan your whole trip around outdoor time.

Crowds and Prices

Brussels sees fewer tourists in April than comparable European capitals. The Grand-Place, Atomium, and Mini-Europe are busy on weekends but not overwhelmingly so. Easter weekend brings Belgian domestic visitors and some European tourists, causing a moderate spike. April is comfortable sightseeing territory. Hotel prices are reasonable, particularly mid-week.

What's On

The Belgian comic strip scene is well-represented year-round, with the Belgian Comic Strip Center always worth a visit. Easter weekend sees some city-centre events and the annual chocolatier promotions. The Sablon antique market runs every weekend throughout April. In late April, the city parks come alive and the outdoor cafe terraces on Place du Grand Sablon and around the Ixelles ponds are genuinely pleasant.

One Thing to Watch

Brussels is a working EU capital, not a tourist machine. Some of the best restaurants in the Ixelles and Saint-Gilles neighbourhoods close on Sundays and Mondays, and many good local spots close over Easter. If you are there over a long weekend, plan your dining in advance. The tourist-facing restaurants around the Grand-Place stay open but are overpriced.
