The best time to visit Salzburg is May to June or September. The city is small and fills quickly; outside the festival and Christmas windows, these months give you the baroque old town and the mountain backdrop in good conditions without the summer saturation. Salzburg is also one of Europe's best winter destinations if the Christmas market window aligns.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

  • January to February: Cold (around -2 to 4C), often snowy. The Christmas crowds have gone. Quiet, with snow on the fortress and the hills making the city look cinematic. A good budget window.
  • March to April: Spring arrives slowly in the Alps. Temperatures reach 10-14C. The city starts waking up. Easter can bring a visitor spike but nothing like the summer intensity.
  • May to June: One of the best windows. Temperatures around 18-22C, the Mirabell Gardens are in bloom, and the Salzburg Festival has not yet started. The city is lively and accessible.
  • July to August: The Salzburg Festival (late July through August) is one of the world's great classical music events. The city fills with opera and concert-goers, hotel prices multiply, and accommodation books out months ahead. Magnificent if that is the purpose; expensive and crowded if it is not.
  • September: Excellent. The Festival ends in late August and the city exhales. Temperatures around 17-21C, excellent conditions for cycling along the Salzach and hiking the surrounding trails.
  • October: Cooling toward 12-15C. Quieter and autumnal. Still pleasant for the old town and the fortress.
  • November: Building toward the Christmas season. Not especially interesting in the first half of the month.
  • December: Salzburg Christmas Markets are among Austria's best. The Domplatz and Mirabellplatz markets, the snow-covered fortress, and the Bach and Mozart concerts make December genuinely special. Cold (around -1 to 5C) but atmospheric. Book accommodation early for the main December market weekends.

Peak Season

The Salzburg Festival (late July to late August) is the highest-demand period by far. Hotel prices in this window are extraordinary. If you are not there for the Festival, this is the month to avoid. December Christmas market weekends are the second peak.

Shoulder Season

May and September are the practical best. Both offer good weather, the city in full operation, and reasonable accommodation prices. September is particularly good for outdoor activity, with the landscape still green before autumn sets in properly.

What to Avoid

Late July and August if you are not attending the Salzburg Festival and have not booked accommodation months ahead: the prices are at their peak for what is essentially a normal city break experience while the festival occupies every concert venue.
