April is a good month to visit the Peak District, with the caveat that Easter week is when the national park sees its heaviest visitor pressure of the entire year. Outside of Easter, early to mid-April offers some of the best walking conditions: green valleys, good visibility, and manageable car parks. The limestone dales are particularly good in spring.

Weather

April in the Peak District ranges from 4C at night to 12C during the day. The high moorland (Kinder Scout, Bleaklow) is colder and windier. Spring weather is genuinely variable: brilliant one day, grey and wet the next. Full waterproofs and sturdy walking boots are essential. Layering works well across the weather range, and a warm hat for moorland walks is sensible even in April.

Crowds and Prices

The Peak District does not have hotels in the way a city does, but the village pubs, B&Bs, and self-catering cottages fill up fast over Easter. Castleton, Bakewell, Dovedale, and the Chatsworth area are the busiest spots. Car parks at popular trailheads fill before 10am over Easter weekend. Accommodation in the national park over Easter should be booked months ahead.

What's On

Easter brings wells dressing in some Peak District villages, one of England's oldest traditions (though the main wells dressing season is May to August). Chatsworth House reopens its gardens for the spring season in April and the house itself is open to visitors. The Tissington Trail and Monsal Trail (converted railway lines) are excellent cycling and walking routes, accessible from April onwards.

One Thing to Watch

Dovedale stepping stones on Easter Sunday are a genuinely extreme crowd moment. Thousands of people visit this single beauty spot over Easter. If you want the stepping stones and the Dove Valley walk, do it on a Tuesday or Wednesday before or after Easter week. The same applies to Stanage Edge and the Roaches: they fill up on any warm spring weekend.
