Lyon in May is one of those visits that converts people into devoted advocates. The city is beautiful, the food is extraordinary, and it gets a fraction of the tourist attention that Paris receives. May brings warm weather, long days, and a city in full stride before the summer festival season. It's a strong case for France's most underrated city.

Weather

Temperatures range from 13°C to 22°C in May, with plenty of sunshine and occasional rain. The Rhone valley can get warm days earlier than Paris, and the outdoor terraces along the Saone and Rhone rivers are in full use by May. A light jacket for evenings is useful but daytime sightseeing is comfortable in light layers.

Crowds and Prices

Lyon is a major French city but not a mass tourist destination in the same way as Paris or Nice. May is busy enough that restaurants and attractions are running at full capacity, but you're not fighting crowds at every turn. Accommodation is significantly cheaper than Paris for comparable quality. The Vieux Lyon district and Croix-Rousse are both accessible and pleasant without the gridlock of summer.

What's On

1 May is a public holiday in France (Labour Day). Many local businesses close, but the city's major tourist infrastructure stays open. It's a day when Lyon's parks and riverbanks fill with locals, which is a good atmosphere to be part of.

Nuits de Fourviere festival begins in June, but the ancient Roman theatre at Fourviere starts its programming preparations in May and the site is atmospheric to visit even outside concert season.

Ascension and Pentecost fall in May on some years, both public holidays in France, which can mean additional short breaks and busy travel weekends.

One Thing to Watch

Lyon's bouchon restaurants, the traditional Lyonnais bistros that are the centrepiece of any food visit, are small, popular, and don't always take walk-ins easily. The best ones fill up quickly and May is peak dining season. Make reservations before you arrive, particularly for dinner. Lunch is generally easier but still worth booking at the most recommended spots. Don't treat this as something to sort out on arrival.

Our Lyon travel guide has the bouchon recommendations and the neighbourhood guide so your trip is built around eating well.
