Lyon in March is a food lover's city break that most visitors have not considered. The city that Paul Bocuse built is operating at full culinary capacity in March, the bouchons are warm, the wine lists are excellent, and the old city streets are walkable without summer queues. Lyon is consistently underrated as a European city break, and March is one of its better months for a genuine, unhurried visit.
Weather
March temperatures in Lyon range from 5°C at night to 11°C to 13°C during the day. Rain is common and the Rhone-Alps climate can be grey and cool, particularly early in the month. A warm jacket, layers, and a waterproof are sensible. Late March can bring milder and sunnier stretches with temperatures reaching 16°C to 17°C. The city sits between two rivers and is very walkable, so weather matters for the full experience.
Crowds and Prices
Lyon is not a mass-tourist city in the way Paris or Rome are, but it sees strong visitor numbers in summer. March is quiet by any measure. The old city (Vieux-Lyon), the Croix-Rousse hill, and the Presqu'ile are all accessible without crowds. The Musee des Confluences and the Musee des Beaux-Arts run normally throughout March. Hotels, particularly in the 1st and 2nd arrondissements, are priced below summer rates.
What's On
The Fete des Lumieres (Festival of Lights) is Lyon's world-famous event, but it takes place in December, not March. March is a quieter month on the events calendar, though the city's restaurant and bouchon scene is the event itself. The bouchon tradition, hearty Lyonnaise cooking served in small family-run restaurants, is at its best in cooler weather when dishes like quenelles, gratins, and andouillette are at their most appealing. March is genuinely ideal for eating in Lyon.
One Thing to Watch
Some Lyon bouchons close on Sundays and Mondays, and family-run restaurants sometimes close for holidays in March. Check specific restaurant opening days before building your itinerary around a particular meal. The Les Halles Paul Bocuse food market is excellent for sourcing produce and deli items, but it closes on Mondays. Plan your market visit for a Tuesday through Saturday.
