Lyon in April: What to Expect

April in Lyon is very good. France's gastronomy capital sits in the Rhone Valley with spring arriving reliably and the bouchon (traditional Lyonnais bistro) culture running at full pace. It is not Paris in terms of tourist infrastructure, which is precisely why it works well as a city break.

Weather

April in Lyon brings daytime temperatures of 14C to 18C, with mild evenings around 8C. Sunshine increases through the month and the Rhone and Saone riversides are pleasant for walking. Rain is possible, particularly early in the month, but Lyon has excellent indoor options (the bouchons are a good place to wait out a shower). Pack a light jacket and layers.

Crowds and Prices

Lyon is a business city and tourist volumes, while growing, are lower than comparable French cities of its stature. April is shoulder season. The Vieux Lyon (old town) is busy at weekends but navigable. Hotel prices are mid-range and good value for a city of Lyon's quality. Easter brings some domestic French tourists.

What's On

Lyon's Fete des Lumieres (Festival of Lights) is in December, not April, but the city's cultural calendar has activity throughout the year. The bouchon lunch culture is the main year-round draw. April is a good time to visit Beaujolais wine country (about 40 minutes north): the spring vines are budding and guided tours of producers are available. The Halles Paul Bocuse covered market is excellent year-round.

One Thing to Watch

Bouchons in Lyon often close on weekends, particularly Saturday evenings and Sundays. This catches visitors off guard. The bouchon lunch (midi) is the proper time to eat in Lyon, with multi-course lunches at modest prices. Arriving in Lyon and expecting a bouchon dinner on Saturday or Sunday is setting yourself up for disappointment. Plan your serious eating on weekday lunchtimes.
