Lyon in October is one of our strongest recommendations in this entire list. France's food capital at the beginning of the game season, with bouchon restaurants opening their autumn menus, is a genuinely special thing. Add quieter crowds, comfortable temperatures, and the Saone and Rhone rivers reflecting autumn colour, and you have a city break that overdelivers on almost every count.

Weather

Pleasant and cooling. Expect 14-18°C in early October, dropping to 10-14°C by late October. Rain becomes more frequent through the month. Lyon's traboules (the covered passageways through the old town) are an excellent rain-day option since they connect most of the Vieux Lyon quarter. Pack layers and a waterproof. The city is very walkable and its hills (Fourviere and Croix-Rousse) are best tackled in cooler weather.

Crowds and Prices

Significantly quieter than summer. Lyon is France's third city and has a substantial domestic and international visitor base, but October is a genuine shoulder season. Hotels are more affordable, the bouchons have tables available without weeks of advance booking, and the Roman amphitheatre on Fourviere Hill has proper space to appreciate it. The Musee des Beaux Arts (one of France's best outside Paris) is unhurried.

What's On

October is game season in Lyon and the bouchons know it. Duck, rabbit, wild boar, and partridge appear on menus alongside the year-round quenelles and gratins. It's the best time to eat in a city where eating is already taken very seriously. The Festival Lumiere, Lyon's major cinema event celebrating the city where the Lumiere brothers invented film, runs in October, bringing film stars, retrospectives, and screenings across the city. It's excellent.

One Thing to Watch

The Festival Lumiere runs for about a week in mid-October and is genuinely worth planning around. It brings some extra hotel demand and a livelier atmosphere, but it's not the same scale of disruption as something like Lisbon Web Summit. It's a reason to visit in October, not a reason to avoid it. Book accommodation ahead for Festival Lumiere week and you'll be fine.
