Lyon in February: What to Expect

Lyon in February is an underrated choice. The city's bouchons, the traditional Lyonnais bistros that make it France's unofficial food capital, are operating at full pace and without the summer dining rush. The Presqu'ile and Vieux-Lyon are quieter, hotel prices are low, and the city's Gallo-Roman history and Silk District (Croix-Rousse) are as rewarding in winter as at any other time. If you are going to Lyon primarily to eat, February is close to ideal.

Weather

February averages 2C to 8C. Rain is frequent and the city can be grey for extended periods. Snow is possible. A proper coat, warm layers, and waterproof footwear are needed. The saving grace is that Lyon's culinary culture is specifically designed for being inside: long lunches and multi-course dinners are the natural winter activity.

Crowds and Prices

Low season. The Musee des Beaux-Arts, Fourviere Basilica, and the old town are accessible without queues. Flights from the UK are cheap. Hotel prices in the Presqu'ile and near the Part-Dieu station are competitive. The major cultural institutions keep full winter hours.

What's On

Carnival events run in Lyon in the weeks before Lent. The city also hosts various winter gastronomic events, and February falls within the Bocuse d'Or culinary competition period (the competition itself is in January, but the wider food culture in the city is particularly energised around this time). Valentine's Day is taken seriously in Lyon's restaurant scene, with special menus across the bouchons.

One Thing to Watch

Lyon's bouchons have limited covers and do not take bookings far in advance in the traditional sense. Popular ones fill quickly at lunch. Arrive at opening time (typically noon) or be prepared to wait. February does not eliminate this: the local dining culture fills these places regardless of season. It is a minor inconvenience worth anticipating.
