Seven days in Tallinn is more than enough. The city is compact and well-organised, and two days gives you the Old Town plus the districts beyond it that most visitors miss. The rest of your week belongs to some excellent day trips and, if you are feeling ambitious, an overnight in either Helsinki or Riga.

What a Week Actually Gets You

Tallinn's medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and earns its reputation. Toompea Hill with its Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the view over the lower town fills a morning. The lower town covers Town Hall Square, the pharmacy that claims to be one of the oldest in Europe, the Church of the Holy Ghost, and the maze of streets between the two. In summer this area gets crowded by midday; mornings and evenings are the better times to walk it.

Day two goes to Kalamaja, the converted factory district with Telliskivi Creative City at its centre. It feels nothing like the Old Town, which is the point. Good coffee shops, independent food vendors, Balti jaam market on the edge of it, and the Seaplane Harbour museum if you have children or a serious interest in engineering and maritime history.

Days three and four: Lahemaa National Park is 70 kilometres east and one of the most underrated national parks in northern Europe. Coastal manors, forest trails, bog landscapes, and a genuine sense of remoteness. A full day rewards this.

A day trip to Helsinki by high-speed ferry (two and a half hours each way) works well from Tallinn. You get a taste of Finnish design, the Market Hall, and a very different Nordic energy before heading back.

What Still Gets Left Out

Riga, the Latvian capital, is a four-hour bus or drive south and could extend a Baltic trip significantly. Parnu on the Estonian coast is a pleasant summer town but not worth a detour in poor weather. The islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa need overnight stays to do them justice.

The Old Town in Tallinn is also expensive by Baltic standards, particularly for food and drink along the main tourist streets. Venturing five minutes off the beaten path drops prices noticeably.

How to Structure the Week

Day 1: Old Town in full. Toompea in the morning, lower town in the afternoon, dinner somewhere off the main square. Day 2: Kalamaja, Telliskivi, Balti jaam market, Seaplane Harbour. Day 3: Lahemaa National Park day trip. Day 4: Helsinki ferry day trip, or a slower Tallinn day hitting anything you missed. Days 5-6: Options. Riga overnight if you want more Baltic cities, or relaxed Tallinn days (neighbourhood cafes, day spas, coastal walks to Pirita beach). Day 7: Old Town one last time in the early morning, departure.
