Two days in Los Angeles is not enough. LA is not a city, it's a collection of distinct cities loosely connected by freeways, and two days barely lets you see one of them properly. Pick your focus, drive to it, and accept that you've seen one corner of an enormous place.
What You Can Cover in 2 Days
Two focused days in LA:
- Santa Monica and Venice Beach. The Pacific coast on the western edge of the city. Santa Monica Pier, the Venice Beach Boardwalk, and Abbot Kinney Boulevard for eating and shopping. A logical first half-day that gives you the "LA at the beach" experience.
- Hollywood Boulevard and Griffith Observatory. The Walk of Fame and TCL Chinese Theatre are tourist attractions that are simultaneously overrated and worth seeing. Griffith Observatory on the hill above gives panoramic views of the city and the Hollywood sign.
- The Getty Center. Free to enter (parking fee applies). One of the finest contemporary art museums in the world, with architecture and gardens that are attractions in their own right. Allow three hours.
- West Hollywood or Silver Lake for an evening. The Sunset Strip or the more residential Silver Lake are both good evening destinations, each with restaurants and bars that reflect a different side of the city.
What You'll Miss
Two days in LA:
- Downtown LA. The city's downtown is a legitimate urban core that most first-time visitors skip entirely. It has excellent museums, the Grand Central Market, and a concentrated walkable neighbourhood that feels nothing like the beach LA.
- Malibu, Pasadena, and the San Fernando Valley. Each is a different city in the LA constellation. Two days doesn't stretch to them.
- The food scene properly. LA has one of the most diverse and interesting food scenes in the US. Two days gives you four or five meals. That's barely an introduction.
- The traffic as a real experience. You will spend a meaningful portion of your two days sitting in traffic. Factor this in.
How to Make the Most of It
- Rent a car. LA without a car is a severely limited experience. The city is built for driving. Public transport exists but doesn't cover most of what you'll want to do.
- Choose a base and stay in it. Santa Monica is the best short-visit base: walkable, near the beach, easy freeway access. Hollywood or West Hollywood for the entertainment area.
- Don't try to drive from Santa Monica to Hollywood and back in the same day in peak hours. The distance is twenty miles. The time is unpredictable.
- Book the Getty in advance. The parking is timed and limited. Walking up or taking the shuttle is the alternative.
The Honest Verdict
Two days in Los Angeles gives you one or two neighbourhoods from a city that needs a week to make sense. It's worth doing as part of a California road trip. As a standalone destination, book more time.
