Two days in Krakow is enough to cover the city's historic core, but only if you've decided in advance whether to include Auschwitz-Birkenau. That decision shapes the entire two-day structure.

Two days in Krakow:

The Old Town and the Main Market Square. The Rynek Glowny is one of the largest medieval squares in Europe, with the Cloth Hall at its centre and St Mary's Basilica on the corner. The trumpet call from the church tower plays every hour on the hour.
Wawel Castle and Cathedral. The royal hill above the Old Town with the castle complex, the cathedral, and the dragon's lair at the base. Allow two to three hours. Book timed entry for the castle interiors.
Kazimierz. The former Jewish district south of the Old Town, now Krakow's bohemian neighbourhood. The synagogues, the Jewish cemetery, and the cafe culture are all within easy walking distance.
Auschwitz-Birkenau on one of the two days. The memorial and museum is ninety minutes from Krakow by bus. It requires a full day and advance booking for the guided tour. This is the most common reason people come to Krakow and it deserves proper time.

Two days in Krakow:

Nowa Huta. The Stalinist model district east of the city is one of the most unusual architectural environments in Poland. It's a tram ride away and needs two hours. It almost always gets cut.
The Wieliczka Salt Mine. A UNESCO World Heritage Site with underground chapels carved entirely from salt. Popular and worth visiting, but adds a half-day to an already tight schedule.
Slow time in Kazimierz. The neighbourhood rewards lingering. Two days means Auschwitz takes one day and Kazimierz gets an afternoon rather than the extended time it deserves.

How to Make the Most of It

Decide on Auschwitz before you arrive. Book the guided tour in advance. The self-guided option requires less planning but the guided tour provides essential context.
Do Wawel Castle on the same morning you arrive. It's the city's most important sight and the booking system means early slots are better.
Stay in Kazimierz, not in the Old Town. The Old Town accommodation is more expensive and less interesting. Kazimierz is a ten-minute walk from Wawel and a more characterful base.
Eat pierogies at Milkbar Tomasza. The milk bar (bar mleczny) tradition is one of Poland's most distinctive cultural exports and the food is cheap and good.

The Honest Verdict

Two days in Krakow is a full and serious visit if Auschwitz is included. Without it, two days is comfortable. With it, two days is exactly enough. The city itself doesn't require three days, but the history it sits within might.
