March is one of the better months to visit Hong Kong. The city is warming up from its coolest winter period, humidity has not yet reached the oppressive levels of summer, and the main Chinese New Year crowds have dispersed. You get Hong Kong at a comfortable temperature with full access to its harbour, markets, and hiking trails. The city is busy year-round, but March is a genuine sweet spot before the heat builds.

Weather

March temperatures in Hong Kong range from around 18°C at night to 22°C to 24°C during the day. It is mild and comfortable compared to the intense heat and humidity of June through September. That said, early March can be hazy and occasionally cool, particularly at night. Rain is possible though not as frequent as in summer. Light layers and a jacket for evenings are sensible. By late March, temperatures start climbing toward the 26°C to 28°C range and humidity builds noticeably.

Crowds and Prices

Chinese New Year, Hong Kong's biggest annual event, falls in January or February depending on the lunar calendar, so March visits typically avoid that surge. The city is busy throughout the year, but March visitor numbers are lower than summer or the Chinese New Year period. Hotel prices are competitive compared to peak season. The MTR and main tourist routes remain busy because Hong Kong always is, but major sites like Victoria Peak and the Star Ferry are not at their most crowded.

What's On

The Hong Kong Rugby Sevens is one of the most popular events in the city's annual calendar and typically falls in late March or early April. It attracts large international crowds, particularly from the UK and Australia, and hotels around that weekend book out early. The Hong Kong Arts Festival runs in February and March, bringing international performing arts to the city. Check current dates for both events as you plan.

One Thing to Watch

If the Rugby Sevens falls during your March visit, accommodation prices in the central areas spike significantly for that weekend. Check the exact Sevens dates before booking your trip: either lean into the event (book early and early) or shift your dates by a week either side to avoid the premium. Outside of that weekend, March is one of the more affordable and comfortable times to visit Hong Kong.
