June in Hong Kong is a full commitment to tropical summer. Heat, humidity, and the start of typhoon season make it challenging for some visitors, but the city never stops and the skyline is dramatic in any weather. If you're prepared for the conditions, Hong Kong rewards you regardless of when you visit.

Weather

Expect highs of 29-32°C with humidity levels that make the heat feel heavier than the numbers suggest. June brings frequent rainfall, sometimes intense, and the typhoon season runs from June through September. Typhoon warnings can disrupt transport and shut businesses temporarily, though direct hits are less common than the season suggests. Pack light, quick-dry clothing, and carry an umbrella at all times.

Crowds and Prices

June is not peak tourist season for Hong Kong, partly because of the weather. That means hotel prices are more reasonable than during the cooler October to December window. The major attractions, including Victoria Peak, Temple Street Night Market, and the Star Ferry, operate normally. Indoor air conditioning is omnipresent and aggressive: bring a light layer for restaurants and MTR stations.

The Dragon Boat Festival (Tuen Ng Festival) falls in June, typically in early to mid-June depending on the lunar calendar. Dragon boat races take place across Hong Kong's harbours and reservoirs, and it's one of the city's most visually compelling events. Worth checking dates when planning your trip.

One Thing to Watch

Typhoon warnings are categorised in Hong Kong by number (1, 3, 8, 10), and a Signal 8 effectively closes the city: businesses shut, transport stops. Check the Hong Kong Observatory app during your trip and know what the signals mean. A Signal 8 is rare but not unknown in June. Most visitors go through their entire trip without experiencing one, but it's worth understanding the system.
