October is the best month to visit Hong Kong, and we'll say it plainly. The brutal summer humidity drops, typhoon season winds down, temperatures become genuinely comfortable, and the city sheds some of its tourist volume without losing any of its energy. If you've been on the fence about Hong Kong, October tips the balance firmly toward going.
Weather
October is consistently one of Hong Kong's best weather months. Temperatures sit around 23-27°C with lower humidity than the summer months, which makes a dramatic difference to how the city feels. Typhoon season officially runs through October but the risk drops significantly as the month progresses. The skies are often clear and the views from Victoria Peak and across the harbour are at their best. Pack light clothing but bring a layer for the aggressively air-conditioned indoor spaces.
Crowds and Prices
Hong Kong's tourist numbers are not as extreme as peak European destinations, but October's pleasant weather means it's popular with visitors from the wider region. Golden Week (mainland China's national holiday) falls in the first week of October and brings significant numbers of mainland Chinese visitors, which affects hotel prices and queue lengths at popular attractions. If you can, arrive after the first week of October.
What's On
The Clockenflap music and arts festival has returned to Hong Kong in recent years and typically runs in October or November on the harbour front. It's one of Asia's best outdoor festival events. The Hong Kong International Literary Festival runs in November but pre-events and associated programming appear in late October. The harbour fireworks around the national holiday in early October are impressive if you're there for it.
One Thing to Watch
Golden Week, the first week of October, brings a surge of visitors from mainland China that affects restaurants, transport, and tourist sites significantly. Hotel prices spike and popular sites get very crowded. Either time your trip to arrive after 7 October or book well ahead and factor in the busier conditions. The rest of October is excellent. That first week is the one variable worth managing.
