Geneva in October: What to Expect

Geneva in October is a different city from Geneva in July, and in some ways a better one. The lakeside crowds thin, the Jet d'Eau is still running (it stops in late autumn), and the Swiss Alps backdrop takes on autumn colour that makes the whole scene look like it was designed by committee. It's still expensive, because Geneva is always expensive, but October shaves something off the peak-season rates.

Weather

Expect 11-15°C in early October, cooling to 8-11°C by late October. The lake moderates temperatures somewhat, keeping Geneva milder than you might expect for a Swiss city. Rain increases through October and some days the Alps disappear into cloud entirely. Bring layers and a waterproof. The city is extremely walkable even in damp weather, and the view of the Alps on a clear October morning from the lakefront is worth every overcast day that bookends it.

Crowds and Prices

Quieter than summer. Geneva doesn't have the same extreme tourist peaks as Rome or Barcelona, but summer still brings notable visitors and October steps back from that. International conferences and UN assembly events run year-round and can affect hotel availability on specific dates, so check before booking. Otherwise, October is generally a smooth time to visit.

What's On

The Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF) runs in November, but October sees the lead-up programming and some early screenings. The city's museum scene is strong year-round: the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum and the MAMCO (contemporary art museum) both have active programmes. Geneva's watchmaking heritage has its own exhibition culture. The lake boat services are still running in early October for a different view of the city.

One Thing to Watch

The Jet d'Eau, Geneva's iconic 140-metre water fountain in the lake, typically stops for the season sometime in late October or early November depending on weather conditions. If seeing it operating is important to your visit, aim for early to mid-October rather than the last week. It's the kind of thing you only notice is missing after you've taken the photograph.
