Geneva in November: What to Expect

Geneva in November is a composed, unhurried version of an already composed, unhurried city. It's not the most exciting month to visit, but if you're combining it with skiing nearby, using it as a base for the Alps, or simply want to see the lake without crowds, November makes sense.

Weather

Temperatures range from 2°C to 8°C through November, with frequent cloud cover, some rain, and the first dusting of snow in the surrounding Jura and Alpine foothills by month's end. The lake is grey and dramatic. The Jet d'Eau fountain is sometimes turned off in winter, including parts of November, due to wind conditions, so don't build your visit around it.

Crowds and Prices

Geneva operates on a different tourist logic to most European cities: it's primarily a business and conference destination, so leisure crowd levels in November are genuinely low. However, prices don't drop the way they do in Barcelona or Budapest, because conference hotel rates hold the floor. Shop around and book in advance for the best deals.

What's On

The L'Escalade festival falls in December, but preparations and related events sometimes begin in late November. The festival commemorates Geneva's defence against the Duchy of Savoy in 1602 and involves historical re-enactments, torchlit processions, and the traditional Marmite de l'Escalade (a chocolate cauldron).

The city's Christmas market at Place de la Fusterie typically opens in late November, alongside markets at Plainpalais. Geneva's museum scene, including the Museum of Art and History and the CERN Visitor Centre, runs normally through November.

One Thing to Watch

The Jet d'Eau, Geneva's most photographed landmark, is powered down for maintenance at various points in winter, and strong November winds can trigger additional shutdowns. Check the Geneva Tourism website for current operating status before you plan your visit around it.
