Is 3 Days in Geneva Enough? Honest Answer

Three days in Geneva is more than enough for the city itself. Geneva is a small, well-organised city that's easy to cover thoroughly in a day and a half. The case for three days lies in the surrounding region: the Alps, Lake Geneva, and the towns along the shoreline that give the visit proper depth.

What You Can Cover in 3 Days

Three days based in Geneva opens up both the city and the region:

The Old Town (Vieille Ville). St Peter's Cathedral, the Maison Tavel, the Promenade de la Treille. A focused half-day covers it well. Climb the cathedral's north tower for the best view over the rooftops and lake.
The Jet d'Eau and the lakefront. The 140-metre water jet is visible from much of the city and the lakefront promenade is a good evening walk. The flower clock in the Jardin Anglais is nearby.
Palais des Nations and the international district. The European headquarters of the UN offers guided tours. Worth a half-morning if international institutions interest you. Skip it if they don't.
Montreux and the Chillon Castle. An hour along the lake by train. The castle on the water is one of Switzerland's most photogenic historic sites. A full day here in good weather is excellent.
Chamonix by train. The Mont Blanc Express from Chamonix station takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. The view of Mont Blanc, Europe's highest peak, justifies the trip. Check weather forecasts before committing.

What You'll Miss

The Bernese Oberland. Interlaken, Grindelwald, and the Jungfrau region are feasible from Geneva but require a longer day than most visitors are willing to give.
Lausanne. A smaller, hillier lakeside city between Geneva and Montreux. Worth visiting if you're spending more than three days in the region, but it competes with Montreux for the same day-trip slot.

How to Make the Most of It

Don't spend three days in Geneva city. It's a beautiful but small city. Allocate one day to the city and two days to the region around it.
Use the Geneva Travel Card. Hotels provide it free with accommodation; it covers all public transit including boats on the lake. Use it.
Check Chamonix weather before booking anything. Clear days in the Alps are spectacular; overcast days at altitude are expensive disappointments.
Book the Montreux day for your middle day. That way the city sightseeing lands on day one before you know the area, and day three is a loose finish in a city you now understand.

Three days in Geneva works well when you treat it as a base for the Lake Geneva region rather than a city to exhaust. The city is polished and worth a day; the surrounding landscape is what fills the other two with something memorable.
