Is 7 Days in Geneva Enough?

Seven days is more than enough for Geneva itself. Geneva is a beautiful and well-organised city, but it is not large, and two or three days covers it comfortably. A week gives you time to do the city properly and then use it as a base for some genuinely spectacular day trips into the Swiss Alps and along Lake Geneva.

What a Week Actually Gets You

Two to three days in Geneva covers the main things at a sensible pace. The Jet d'Eau on the lake is the city's most famous sight. The Old Town on the hill is compact and worth a full afternoon. The United Nations European headquarters is interesting if you are curious about international institutions. The CERN visitor centre is free and excellent for science-interested visitors. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum is one of the most thoughtful museums in Switzerland.

The lake is central to everything. Boat trips on Lake Geneva are easy to do and give you a completely different perspective on the city and the mountains behind it. Parc des Eaux-Vives and the lakeside promenades are good for a morning walk or an afternoon read.

Geneva is expensive, and a week here means budgeting honestly. The food is good but the costs are significant compared to most European cities.

What Still Gets Left Out

Geneva the city does not leave much out for a seven-day visitor. What it misses is the surrounding region, which is where the week really earns itself.

How to Structure the Week

Days 1 and 2 go to Geneva itself. Old Town, the lake, the Jet d'Eau, CERN, the Red Cross Museum. Walk the promenade in the evenings.

Day 3 is Montreux and the Chillon Castle. About 60 minutes by train along the lake. The castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe and the lake setting is genuinely dramatic.

Day 4 is Lausanne. About 35 minutes by train. Smaller than Geneva, with a steeper old town and a good food scene. The Olympic Museum is here.

Day 5 is Zermatt and the Matterhorn. About two and a half hours by train. You cannot drive to Zermatt, which is part of what makes it worth visiting. The views of the Matterhorn on a clear day are exceptional.

Day 6 is the Bernese Oberland: Interlaken, Grindelwald, or the Jungfraujoch if the budget allows. Three to four hours from Geneva but worth the journey for mountain scenery that most visitors find genuinely arresting.

Day 7 is for a slower day in Geneva. Lake Geneva boat trip, whatever museum you skipped, and a good dinner.
