May is one of the best months to visit Florence. The weather is warm but not yet brutal, the city is in full bloom, and while crowds are building, they haven't reached the suffocating levels of July and August. If you haven't been to Florence before, this is the month to go.
Weather
Temperatures range from 14°C to 24°C through May. Warm, sunny days are the norm, with occasional afternoon thunderstorms in the second half of the month. Light summer clothes work well in the daytime, with a light jacket useful for evenings and air-conditioned museums. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Florence involves a lot of walking on uneven stone.
Crowds and Prices
Florence is one of Italy's most visited cities and there's no pretending May is quiet. The Uffizi, the Accademia, and the Duomo see significant queues throughout the month. The difference from peak summer is that you can manage it with forward planning. Book timed entry tickets for the Uffizi and Accademia weeks in advance, and you'll walk past the people queueing on the day. Hotel prices are rising by May but still below the summer peak.
What's On
1 May is a public holiday in Italy. Many smaller shops and some restaurants close, particularly in the first half of the day. Museums and major attractions typically remain open. It's worth checking opening times for anything you've specifically planned around.
Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, one of Italy's oldest music festivals, runs through May with opera, concerts, and ballet performances at the Teatro del Maggio. If classical music is on your agenda, this is a major one.
One Thing to Watch
The Ponte Vecchio area and the streets between the Duomo and the Uffizi are extremely congested by mid-morning every day. Start early. Visiting the Duomo complex before 9am, the Baptistery, the Campanile, and the cathedral itself, puts you ahead of the tour groups that dominate from late morning onwards. The climb up Brunelleschi's dome is worth doing, but the queue builds fast.
Florence is dense, walkable, and layered. Get the most out of it with the right preparation.
