Florence in March is a strong choice. The summer queues at the Uffizi and the Accademia are months away, hotel prices are lower than any time from April onward, and the city's restaurant and wine bar scene operates year-round with no compromise. March is the start of Florence's spring shoulder season and it delivers the city in a form that feels closer to what the city actually is rather than what it becomes when tour groups arrive in force.
Weather
March temperatures in Florence range from 7°C at night to 14°C to 15°C during the day. Rain is a real possibility, particularly early in the month. The Arno valley can hold cold air, making mornings feel sharp. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket. By late March, sunny afternoons regularly hit 17°C or 18°C, and the city starts to feel genuinely spring-like. The light in Florence in late March is excellent.
Crowds and Prices
The Uffizi Gallery, Accademia (Michelangelo's David), and the Duomo complex all see significantly lower visitor numbers in March than from April through September. Timed entry tickets are still required for the Uffizi and the Accademia, but they are easier to get without booking months in advance. Hotel prices are lower across all categories. The city's central streets around the Duomo are busy on weekends with Italian domestic visitors, but weekday visits are notably quiet.
What's On
Carnevale falls in late February or early March depending on the year, and Florence holds events in Piazza della Repubblica during this period. Easter (if it falls in late March) brings processions and religious events throughout the city, including the Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart) tradition in front of the Duomo on Easter Sunday. The Calcio Storico, Florence's historic football match, is a summer event and not a March consideration.
One Thing to Watch
The Uffizi and the Accademia require advance booking throughout the year, including in March. Do not assume off-season means walk-up. Book both before you arrive. The Duomo complex (including the dome climb and the Baptistery) also requires timed tickets, available on the Opera del Duomo website. Get these sorted before you land.
