June is an underrated time to visit Edinburgh. The Fringe hasn't started yet (that's August), which means you get the city in summer mode without the accommodation prices tripling. Good weather, long days, and a city that's lively without being overwhelmed. It's one of the better months on the calendar.

Weather

Expect highs of 16-19°C in June, with long days stretching to around 17 hours of daylight. Edinburgh's weather is famously variable: sunshine and showers can alternate within the same hour. Pack layers and a waterproof regardless of what the forecast says. Arthur's Seat is spectacular in good weather and miserable in bad, so wait for a clear spell.

Crowds and Prices

June sees rising tourist numbers but nothing like August. The Royal Mile is busy, Edinburgh Castle has queues, and it's worth booking the castle in advance to avoid them. The Old Town and Grassmarket are busy but navigable. Accommodation prices are meaningfully lower than August, which makes June good value by Edinburgh standards.

What's On

The Edinburgh International Film Festival, one of the world's oldest, typically runs in June and is worth building around if cinema is your thing. The city also has a range of live music, walking festivals, and whisky-focused events through the month. The Royal Botanic Garden is at its best in June and makes for an excellent free afternoon.

One Thing to Watch

Arthur's Seat, the volcanic hill right in the city, is Edinburgh's best free attraction. It's a 45-60 minute hike from Holyrood Park and the views are exceptional. But the path is uneven and can be slippery after rain, which happens in Edinburgh. Wear proper shoes, not trainers, and not sandals. The number of tourists who underestimate this walk is significant.
