May is a genuinely good time to visit Edinburgh. The city is awake and lively, but the August Fringe madness is three months away. You get the full Edinburgh experience, the castle, the Old Town, the pubs, the hills, without paying peak prices or fighting through the crowds that define August.
Weather
May temperatures sit between 8°C and 15°C. Scotland will remind you it's still Scotland: rain is possible any day, and wind on the higher ground is a fact of life. Pack layers, a waterproof jacket, and shoes that can handle cobblestones in wet conditions. That said, May often delivers some of the year's sunniest days, and Edinburgh in sunshine is hard to beat.
Crowds and Prices
Compared to August, May is a different city. Hotels are significantly cheaper, the Royal Mile doesn't require elbowing through tour groups, and you can get into popular restaurants without booking weeks ahead. It's not empty, Edinburgh pulls visitors year-round, but it's proportionate. Book accommodation a few weeks ahead rather than months, and you'll be fine.
What's On
Beltane Fire Festival takes place on 30 April each year on Calton Hill, welcoming May with an ancient Celtic celebration of fire and theatre. If your trip overlaps, it's a genuinely memorable night. Tickets sell out, so plan ahead if this is on your list.
Edinburgh International Science Festival runs through April and into early May, with talks and events at venues across the city. It's accessible and genuinely interesting for anyone curious about how the world works.
1 May is a public holiday in Scotland. Some local businesses close, but tourist sites stay open.
One Thing to Watch
Arthur's Seat and the Pentland Hills are at their most appealing in May, but Scottish weather can turn fast at altitude. If you're walking up Arthur's Seat, which you should, bring a windproof layer even if it looks calm from the city. The top is exposed and the view depends on clear skies, which are worth waiting for.
