Edinburgh in summer has a reputation that is frankly inaccurate if you arrive expecting warm Mediterranean-style weather. June through August brings temperatures between 14 and 19 degrees Celsius on typical days, occasionally hitting 22 on exceptional ones. The Fringe Festival fills August with energy, the Castle and Holyrood Park are at their most dramatic, and the long northern daylight hours work in your favour. The wind and rain, however, are non-negotiable parts of the package.
The Heat/Weather Strategy
Edinburgh's weather is governed by its position on the east coast of Scotland and the unpredictability that comes with it. Summer is warmer and drier than the rest of the year, but warm and dry are relative terms. A sunny morning can become a sharp, cold shower by lunchtime. The wind coming off the Firth of Forth makes any temperature feel colder than it reads.
August during the Fringe means the city is packed and outdoor venues and street performers operate in all weather. If you are going for the festival, pack to be outside in any conditions.
City-Specific Must-Haves
A proper waterproof jacket is the most important item. Not shower-resistant, waterproof. Edinburgh's rain is sharp and the wind gives it direction. A hooded waterproof shell you can pack into your bag is the essential daily carry.
Warm layers underneath: a base layer, a mid-layer (thin jumper or fleece), and the waterproof on top covers the full Edinburgh summer temperature range. Evenings drop noticeably even in August, particularly on the Royal Mile and in the open areas around Arthur's Seat.
Comfortable, waterproof walking shoes or boots handle the Old Town's uneven cobblestones and the climb up Arthur's Seat (which is very much worth doing and requires grip, not just flat soles). Good ankle support helps on the rocky paths.
A small backpack carries layers, waterproofs, and the contents of your day out. Edinburgh is walkable but the terrain means you will want both hands free rather than carrying bags.
Sunscreen for the good days. When Edinburgh is sunny it is genuinely beautiful, and the UV index on clear summer days is higher than the cool temperature implies.
What to Leave Behind
Leave behind any expectation of packing only light summer clothing. It is a trap. Even the warmest Edinburgh summer days call for at least one layer by evening.
Heavy formal shoes have no place on Edinburgh's cobblestones. Practicality wins here.

Layers sorted. The guide covers the Fringe logistics, how to do Arthur's Seat without the crowds, and which whisky bars are worth your time versus which ones are just tourist traps.
