Edinburgh in October suits its own personality. The summer festival chaos is long over, the Fringe crowds have gone, and the city returns to itself: slightly windswept, architecturally dramatic, full of good whisky and good pubs. It's genuinely cold and it will rain. The trade-off is significant price drops, no queues at the castle, and a city that feels lived-in rather than performed. We think that's a fair deal.
Weather
Getting properly cold. Expect 9-12°C in early October, dropping to 6-9°C by late October. Rain is frequent and the wind off the Firth of Forth adds a real chill. Edinburgh's Old Town and Holyrood Park are exposed when the weather comes in. Pack a proper warm coat, waterproofs, and layers. The upside is that Edinburgh's indoor culture, its whisky bars, its museums, its cafe scene, is built for exactly this kind of weather.
Crowds and Prices
Dramatically cheaper than August, which is when the Festival and Fringe push accommodation prices into genuinely painful territory. October hotels are a fraction of the cost. The Royal Mile is navigable. Edinburgh Castle has queue times that don't require advance scheduling. The city's restaurants and pubs have space and are in a much better mood. It's a completely different atmosphere from summer and, depending on your preferences, a better one.
What's On
Halloween is taken seriously in Edinburgh given the city's strong connection to Scottish folklore and ghost history. The city's ghost tours, always popular, become events in late October. The Scottish capital's arts and cultural scene runs year-round with theatre, live music, and gallery programming. The Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival has long since finished but the music venue scene stays active. Half-term week brings some domestic visitors in late October.
One Thing to Watch
Climbing Arthur's Seat in October is doable but requires the right kit. The paths get slippery when wet and the summit in autumn weather requires proper footwear and layers. It's still one of the best things you can do in Edinburgh, with views that make the city layout make sense, but respect the conditions. Don't attempt it in the rain in trainers.
