Budapest spring is one of Central Europe's better-kept secrets. March sits around 8-13C, cool and occasionally showery but starting to feel alive after winter. April is genuinely lovely: 13-18C, good sunshine, the Danube looking its best, and the crowds still manageable. By May you are at 18-23C, warm enough for outdoor ruin bar evenings and long walks along the river. The temperature can drop suddenly in March, and even April has its cooler days, but the general trajectory is strongly upward and the city rewards those who arrive before the full summer rush.
The Layering Approach
Budapest in spring requires the standard Central European approach: layers you can add or remove as the day progresses. The temperature differential between a March morning (possibly 4-5C) and a May afternoon (possibly 24C) is significant. A base layer, a mid-layer, and a light waterproof shell handles everything. The good news is that Budapest is a city with excellent indoor options, thermal baths, coffee houses, ruin bars, so you can always retreat to warmth when the weather turns. For May, you can travel notably lighter, with a light jacket and one warm mid-layer covering evenings on the Buda side, which tends to be a degree or two cooler than Pest.
City-Specific Essentials
Swimwear: Budapest's thermal baths are the city's defining experience. Szechenyi, Gellert, and Rudas all require swimwear, and you will almost certainly visit at least one. A compact, quick-dry swimsuit or shorts takes up minimal space.
Towel or microfibre travel towel: The baths provide towel rental but it is more convenient to have your own compact option. A microfibre travel towel folds down to almost nothing.
Comfortable walking shoes: Budapest involves real walking distances, from Castle Hill to the Great Market Hall. The cobbled streets of Buda and the wider streets of Pest both call for cushioned, supportive footwear.
Light jacket for evenings: The ruin bar scene in the Jewish Quarter starts late and runs later. Even in May, evenings outdoors at a garden bar benefit from a light layer.
Compact umbrella or packable rain jacket: April showers are a real factor in Budapest. A packable option is better than carrying a full umbrella all day.
Flip-flops for the baths: The pool areas are cleaner than they used to be, but flip-flops remain sensible footwear for moving between changing rooms and pools.
What to Leave Behind
Bulky winter coat: Even in March, Budapest does not demand a full winter coat. A mid-weight jacket and layered mid-layers covers the coldest spring days.
Expensive sandals before May: Cobblestones and cool temperatures make open sandals an impractical spring choice in March and most of April.
Multiple formal outfits: Budapest's evening scene is smart but not rigidly formal. Dark jeans and a decent top handle most dinner reservations and bar visits.
Multiple pairs of shoes: Two pairs, one comfortable walking shoe and one slightly smarter option for evenings, is the most you need for a spring trip to Budapest.
