Budapest in October is excellent value and genuinely beautiful. The Danube promenades, the thermal bath buildings, the baroque and art nouveau architecture: all of it looks better in golden autumn light than it does in the harsh brightness of summer. Crowds are manageable, prices are among the lowest in Europe for a capital city, and the city's food and nightlife scene stays fully operational. It's a strong October pick.
Weather
Expect 12-16°C in early October, cooling to 8-11°C by late October. Rain becomes more frequent in the second half of the month. The autumn foliage in Budapest's parks, particularly Margaret Island and the Buda hills, is worth factoring into your plans. Pack a proper mid-layer and something waterproof. Evening temperatures drop quickly after dark, so plan accordingly if you're doing outdoor activities.
Crowds and Prices
Noticeably quieter than summer. Budapest has become increasingly popular and summer can feel crowded in the ruin bars and on the tourist boats. October brings the crowds back to a level where the city functions more comfortably. Hotel prices drop substantially. Flights from the UK and Europe remain competitive. The thermal baths, a year-round draw, are much more pleasant without summer tourist volumes.
What's On
The Budapest International Marathon runs in October, which is one of the better marathon courses in Europe given the scenery. Café Budapest Contemporary Arts Festival runs in autumn and brings music, theatre, and visual art across multiple venues. The ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter operate year-round but have a different, more local atmosphere in October when the summer visitor numbers ease. Wine harvest season in the Eger and Tokaj regions (day trips from Budapest) is in full swing in early October.
One Thing to Watch
Soaking in a thermal bath in October is significantly better than in summer, when they fill with tourists who treat them more as swimming pools. By October the local-to-tourist ratio improves and the experience returns to what it's supposed to be: restorative. Széchenyi and Rudas are both excellent in autumn. Don't miss the opportunity to go in the evening at Széchenyi when the outdoor pools are lit up.
