Budapest in May: What to Expect

May is arguably the best single month to visit Budapest. The weather is warm without summer heat, the thermal baths are excellent, the outdoor ruin bars start operating at full capacity, and the city looks beautiful along the Danube. It is still excellent value by Western European standards. May in Budapest is hard to argue with.

Weather

May in Budapest sees daytime temperatures of 20C to 23C, with mild evenings around 12C. Sunshine is reliable. This is comfortable warm weather for walking the Buda hills, the Castle District, and the Pest riverside promenade. A light jacket for evenings is sufficient. The views from Fisherman's Bastion and the Gellert Hill citadel are at their best in the clear May light.

Crowds and Prices

Budapest in May is early peak season. The city is notably busier than April: visitor numbers from Western Europe, especially the UK, Germany, and Austria, build through the month. Hotels in the fifth and sixth district (the main tourist area around the Parliament and the Great Market Hall) charge higher prices in May. Book ahead, particularly for the bank holiday weekends around Pentecost.

What's On

The Budapest Spring Festival runs through late March and into April, but May sees the Budapest Wine Festival preparations begin (the main event is in May at the Buda Castle). The outdoor thermal bath culture reaches its full season: Szechenyi's outdoor pools are used at full capacity on warm May evenings, which is one of the best Budapest experiences. The Sziget Festival is in August, but the city's club and bar scene runs year-round.

One Thing to Watch

Budapest's ruin bars (romkocsmak), particularly Szimpla Kert in the old Jewish quarter, are open year-round but at their most magical in May when the outdoor courtyards are fully operational. Szimpla has a Sunday morning farmers market that is worth knowing about. The thermal baths are busiest in May on warm weekday evenings, particularly Szechenyi. Weekday mornings are significantly calmer.
