Budapest in November makes a strong case for itself. The city drops its tourist-season pricing, the thermal baths become a genuine pleasure rather than a crowded novelty, and by late November the Christmas market on Vorosmarty Square opens and Budapest becomes one of the most atmospheric cities in Europe.
Weather
Temperatures range from 2°C to 9°C, with cloudy skies and occasional rain or fog. The Danube looks brooding and dramatic in November. Cold evenings are the norm, so warm layers are non-negotiable. On the plus side, this is exactly the weather that makes Budapest's ruin bars and thermal baths feel like the right call.
Crowds and Prices
November is deep low season, and prices reflect it. Flights from London are frequently under 50 euros return, and hotels in the 7th district and along the Danube bank drop to very accessible prices. The Fisherman's Bastion and Buda Castle are far less crowded, and the queues at Szechenyi Baths are a fraction of their summer length.
What's On
The Budapest Christmas market (Advent Feast at the Basilica) opens in mid to late November and is one of the best in Central Europe. The Saint Stephen's Basilica provides a dramatic backdrop, and the food and craft stalls are genuinely high quality. The Vorosmarty Square market opens around the same time.
November is also excellent for opera and classical music. The Hungarian State Opera House is in full swing, and tickets are far cheaper and easier to obtain than in Vienna for comparable performances.
One Thing to Watch
The thermal baths are busy on weekends year-round. If you want a quieter experience at Szechenyi or Gellert, visit on a weekday morning when the local crowd is at work rather than the tourist crowd at play.
