Budapest in March is cold, but the city is built for it. The thermal baths are a genuine pleasure when the temperature drops, the ruin bars are at their most atmospheric without summer queues, and prices are lower than any other time of year outside January. For visitors who want Budapest without the crowds, March is a legitimate answer.
Weather
March temperatures in Budapest run from 2°C at night to around 10°C during the day. Cold spells and rain are common, and early March can still feel like winter. Snow is possible though usually brief. Pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and comfortable shoes. By late March, temperatures can reach 14°C to 15°C on sunny days, and the city starts to feel like spring is genuinely arriving.
Crowds and Prices
Budapest is one of Europe's best-value cities in March. Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, and the Parliament building are all accessible with minimal waiting. The Great Market Hall is busy with locals doing their shopping rather than tourists taking photos, which is a more interesting experience anyway. Ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter are open and operating without the queues and entry charges they adopt in peak summer. Hotel prices are significantly below what they hit in April through October.
What's On
Budapest Spring Festival typically runs in late March and into April, bringing classical music, opera, and contemporary performances to venues across the city. Check the exact dates as you plan, as the festival is one of Central Europe's more significant cultural events. Hungarian Revolution Day on 15 March is a national holiday with commemorations and events around the city, particularly at the National Museum.
One Thing to Watch
Some of the outdoor terraces and market stalls along the Danube promenade are reduced or not operating in early March. The riverside experience is quieter than it becomes in warmer months. Balance your itinerary toward the city's strong indoor offer, the thermal baths, the Great Synagogue, the Parliament interior tour, and the castle district, and Budapest in March becomes an excellent trip.
