Bryce Canyon and Zion: Day Trips or Overnight from Las Vegas?

Within a four-hour drive of Las Vegas sits some of the most dramatic landscape in North America. Zion National Park is 2.5 hours northeast. Bryce Canyon is 4 hours. Both are in southern Utah and both are places that recalibrate your sense of what landscape can look like. Doing them as day trips from Las Vegas is possible and somewhat brutal; overnighting in the parks is better.

Zion National Park: 2.5 Hours from Las Vegas

Zion is defined by the Virgin River Gorge — a canyon with sandstone walls rising 900 metres above the valley floor, in shades of red, orange, and white. The colour and scale are immediately overwhelming. The main canyon road is closed to private vehicles; a free shuttle system runs between trailheads.

The Narrows: the signature Zion hike, wading up the Virgin River between canyon walls that close to a few metres across at some points. The slot canyon is one of the most photographed landscapes in the United States. You walk in the river — water shoes or waterproof boots are essential. The entry wading point is at the Temple of Sinawava, the last shuttle stop.

Angel's Landing: a 7.2 km round trip with 488 metres of elevation gain, ending on a narrow sandstone fin with steep drops on both sides. The final section uses chains fixed to the rock. Dramatic and genuinely exposed — not suitable for those with a serious fear of heights. A permit is now required for the final section (reserve well in advance through the park system).

Entry to Zion: $35 per vehicle, or covered by the America the Beautiful pass. Overnight in Springdale (the town at the park entrance) or camp inside the park.

Bryce Canyon: 4 Hours from Las Vegas

Bryce Canyon is technically an amphitheatre rather than a canyon — the Pink Cliffs eroded into thousands of hoodoos (tall, thin spires of rock) in a landscape of deep orange and red contrasted against blue sky. Nothing else looks like Bryce Canyon.

Sunrise Point and Sunset Point: the main viewpoints, accessible from the rim trail. Views of the amphitheatre of hoodoos below. Dawn is the best light.

Queens Garden / Navajo Loop: a 4.8 km hike descending into the amphitheatre, passing through the hoodoos rather than looking down at them. The most rewarding hike in the park for the time invested.

Bryce is at 2,700 metres elevation — significantly colder than Las Vegas in any season. Snow is possible in shoulder months.

Day Trip vs. Overnight

Zion as a day trip: possible. Leave Las Vegas at 6 AM, hike the Narrows or Emerald Pools, return by 9 PM. Tiring but achievable.

Bryce as a day trip: 8-hour round trip with four hours at the park. Borderline worth it; the park deserves more time.

Combined Zion and Bryce overnight: the natural approach — one night in Springdale or Bryce City, both parks in two days. This is the road trip from Las Vegas that makes the most of the region.

Our Take

Zion is close enough for a long day trip if you focus on one hike (The Narrows). Bryce rewards an overnight. Both together in two days is one of the best road trips in the United States.
