May is an excellent month for Bruges. The medieval city is at its prettiest in late spring, the famous Holy Blood Procession takes place on Ascension Day, and the city is fully open and operational without the absolute peak pressure of July and August. It is a good-looking, compact city break that works particularly well in May.

Weather

May in Bruges sees daytime temperatures of 15C to 19C, with mild evenings around 10C. Sunshine increases through the month. Rain is possible but less frequent than April. The canal reflections in May light are excellent, and the windowbox flower displays on the step-gabled houses are at their peak. A light jacket for evenings is sufficient.

Crowds and Prices

Bruges is small and crowded easily. May is busy, particularly on weekends and during the Holy Blood Procession period. Weekday visits in mid-May, outside of the procession weekend, are the sweet spot: warm weather, manageable crowds, and good availability at restaurants and accommodation. Hotel prices are mid-range, higher than winter but below July.

What's On

The Heilig Bloedprocessie (Holy Blood Procession) takes place on Ascension Day, which falls 39 days after Easter (typically in May). It is Bruges' most significant cultural and religious event: a procession through the city streets carrying a relic said to contain the blood of Christ. The event is theatrical, historically rooted, and draws large crowds. It is one of the genuine reasons to visit Bruges specifically in May.

One Thing to Watch

Ascension Day and the Holy Blood Procession weekend is the most crowded single event in Bruges' spring calendar. Hotels book up significantly for that weekend. Book well in advance if you want to attend. The procession runs along a fixed route through the city centre: positions along the route fill up hours before. Early arrival and a specific viewpoint spot makes the experience significantly better than turning up late.
