Bruges in March: What to Expect

Bruges in March is a different city from the summer version. The day-trip crowds from Brussels and the canal-side queues are gone, accommodation prices are at their lowest, and the medieval centre looks genuinely beautiful under grey skies and early spring light. If your idea of Bruges involves atmosphere rather than sunshine, March delivers it in full.

Weather

March temperatures in Bruges run from 3°C at night to around 10°C during the day. Rain is common and wind off the North Sea plain makes it feel colder than it is. A warm coat, waterproof layer, and comfortable walking shoes are essential. Snow is possible in early March but rare and rarely settling. Late March brings longer days and occasional sunshine, but plan as if it will be cool and damp and be pleasantly surprised when it is not.

Crowds and Prices

Bruges is extremely seasonal. March is firmly off-peak. The canal boats still run (most operators continue through the cooler months), and the Groeningemuseum, Basilica of the Holy Blood, and the Belfry tower are all open and accessible without the summer queues. Weekends in March can still bring day-trippers from Brussels and the UK, particularly over long weekends. Weekdays are genuinely quiet. Hotel prices are significantly lower than April onward.

What's On

March is not a major event month for Bruges. The city's big cultural calendar focuses on summer. That said, Bruges has a strong food and beer scene that runs year-round, and the smaller intimate feel of the city in March is an attraction in itself. Holy Blood Procession is in May, so that is not a factor. Check the local event calendar for any concerts or exhibitions at Concertgebouw Brugge.

One Thing to Watch

Bruges can be very busy on weekend days even in March, as it attracts day-trippers from Brussels, Ghent, and London year-round. If you are staying overnight and want the quietest version of the city, aim for weekday visits and early morning walks before the day-trip coaches arrive. The city transforms between 9am and 10am when the tour groups appear.
