Bruges in November: What to Expect

Bruges in November earns its reputation for atmosphere in ways it can't quite manage in peak summer. The medieval streets empty out, prices fall, and by the third week of the month the Christmas market opens and transforms the Markt and Burg squares into something genuinely worth making the trip for.

Weather

Cold, damp, and grey for most of the month. Temperatures sit between 4°C and 9°C, with frequent mist that clings to the canals and makes the medieval architecture look like a film set. It's actually beautiful in a bleak way. Pack warm layers, a decent waterproof coat, and proper shoes. The cobblestones get slippery when wet.

Crowds and Prices

Early and mid-November are deep low season. The day-tripper coaches that park outside the Markt all summer are largely absent. Hotels that charge peak rates in April and May are available for a fraction of the price. The Groeningemuseum and Memling in Sint-Jan are unhurried and genuinely enjoyable without the queue pressure. Late November picks up slightly once the Christmas market opens, but it remains far calmer than December.

It's one of Belgium's best: local beer, chocolate stalls, and a market that feels embedded in a real city rather than staged for visitors. Early November is quieter on the events front, but the city's chocolate shops, breweries, and museums provide solid indoor programming whatever the weather.

One Thing to Watch

Bruges is a small city and some restaurants and hotels in the quieter outer neighbourhoods reduce hours or take breaks in early November before the Christmas market crowds return. It's worth calling ahead for specific restaurants you have your heart set on, particularly smaller places in the canal-side streets.
