Bruges in October earns the "fairy tale" label more than in any other season. The summer coach parties thin out, the canals reflect bare-branch trees and grey sky, and the city stops feeling like a theme park and starts feeling like a place. It's genuinely beautiful in a way that photographs can't fully capture. If you've dismissed Bruges as too touristy, visit in October and reconsider.

Weather

Cool and often overcast. Expect 11-14°C in early October, dropping to 8-10°C by late October. Rain comes regularly. Bruges' brick architecture and canal system look genuinely atmospheric in damp autumn conditions, and the city is very walkable even in light rain. Pack layers and a waterproof. The upside: every hot chocolate you drink in a warm interior feels completely justified.

Crowds and Prices

Dramatically quieter than summer. Bruges is one of Europe's most visited small cities relative to its size, which means summer is genuinely overwhelming. October brings the numbers back to manageable levels. Hotel prices drop, the main squares and canal-side spots have room, and the climb up the Belfort (Belfry) doesn't require a long queue. Day trips from Brussels and Ghent still happen on weekends, so midweek visits are quieter still.

What's On

Bruges doesn't have a single headline October event but its cultural calendar stays active. Local restaurants often launch autumn menus with game, seasonal vegetables, and warming Belgian classics. Belgian beer culture is year-round, but the cooler weather makes sitting in a traditional estaminet with a Trappist ale feel exactly right. The city's chocolate shops and Christmas market preparations begin in late October.

One Thing to Watch

Bruges is small enough that you can genuinely do the highlights in a day trip from Brussels or Ghent. But if you're staying overnight, you'll discover a different city once the day visitors leave, quieter streets, a more authentic feel, and the canals at dusk without the crowds. October is the best month to experience that overnight version of Bruges. Don't just pass through.
